The Markham Fair is one of Canada oldest country fairs. Since 1844 the fair has been providing the community with a showcase for talents and products in a friendly competitive spirit. With over 700 volunteers working on more than 70 committees, Markham Fair is the largest community based volunteer organization in Canada.
Markham Fair occurs annually on the weekend before Thanksgiving, and hosts upwards of 80,000 attendees. Approximately 3,000 exhibitors will enter more than 12,000 items, which will be judged and put on display during the fair. Promoting excellence through competition in this way, is what makes fairs unique in comparison to other events.
As well as the competitive displays, the community is further brought together to enjoy various forms of entertainment such as horse pull, demolition derby, tractor pull, midway rides and displays of farm animals.

Fire At Abandoned Richmond Hill Building
Richmond Hill firefighters were called to a fire at an abandoned building near the corner of Stouffville Road and Yonge Street yesterday afternoon.Firefighters arrived at the scene just before 2:30 p.m. as thick smoke could be spotted miles away.As a precaution, York Regional Police had Stouffville Road blocked off at both Yonge and Bayview Avenue.The building is believed to have been abandoned for awhile. The cause of the fire is unknown.

3-Car Crash Kills Thornhill Man
A Thornhill man has died from injuries suffered in a three-vehicle collision last week.
Just after 8 p.m. Thursday, a 2006 BMW M6 driven by Ilgiz Burov, 23, was struck by a truck.
According to Toronto Police, the BMW was northbound on Avenue Road when it was struck by the truck crossing the road on Castlefield Avenue.
Three other people were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, treated and released.
The rental truck's driver was not hurt in the crash.
The truck's driver, Eran Colbus, 35, of Toronto, is charged with careless driving.

Thornhill Man Arrested For York U Sex Assaults
A 25-year-old man is facing 11 charges in connection with two sexual assaults at York University earlier this month.
Daniel Katsnelson of Thornhill, is to appear in court today as police continue searching for a second suspect.
Early on Sept. 7, police say two men walked into six dorm rooms on different floors of the university's Vanier College in Toronto.
The attacks occurred against two 19-year-old women who were sleeping alone in their unlocked rooms at the time.
They were treated and released from hospital.
Katsnelson is charged with five counts of break and enter, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of gang sexual assault and two counts of forcible confinement.

Press Release: Markham to host Junior Firefighter Camp
Junior Firefighter Day - September 25, 2007
MARKHAM, ON ~ September 20, 2007 ~
On Tuesday, September 25, 2007,
the Fire Departments of York Region will host their annual Junior Firefighter Day
at Markham Fire Station 98, 650 Bur Oak Drive, Markham.
In the spring of 2007, each of the nine municipalities in York Region selected a
winner from a Risk Watch theme contest. To be chosen as a winner of the
contest, the students had to write an essay including at least three of the eight
Risk Watch safety components.
Risk Watch is a curriculum-based tool that teaches children about several safety
topics such as traffic, pedestrian, bike and bike helmets, fire and burns, poison,
falls, electrical safety and more. Each of the nine municipalities in York Region
has selected their Junior Firefighter and they will have a day of recognition and
firefighting training along with the Mayor and Fire Chief from each municipality.
The day starts at 10 a.m., with each Junior Firefighter receiving their own official
bunker gear which they will take home with them when the day is finished. They
will then have a chance to ride a fire truck, practice using the fire hose, learn
proper techniques for operating portable fire extinguishers on a live fire and
practice using the 911 phone.
Members of the media are invited to visit and watch the junior firefighters in
action from 10 to noon for lunch and photo opportunities. The day ends about
2:30 p.m.
