Fatal Crash Closes Hwy. 9

One person is dead and several others injured following a crash on Hwy. 9 west of Newmarket this morning.
The five-vehicle crash occurred on the crest of a hill just west of Dufferin Street at about 9 a.m., Staff-Sgt. Chris Bullen said.
Police at the scene confirmed one person was killed instantly. Another was airlifted from the scene at and least three other people were taken to hospital by ambulance, two in critical condition.
Police are advising motorists to find an alternative route through the area as Hwy. 9 is expected to remain closed for up to eight hours.

Carjacking in Markham

York Regional Police are looking for five men after a 61-year-old woman was violently carjacked in Markham last weekend.At about 11:35 p.m. Saturday, the woman, who lives in the Brimley Road and Steeles Avenue area, was getting out of her Toyota Corolla when she was attacked by five men who grabbed her and threw her to the ground.

According to police, the men demanded her keys and then forced her back into the Corolla at gunpoint.

The men left the woman in her car in the Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue area and she called police.

Police are working with limited descriptions of the suspects.

T-Hill Bank Robbed

A man is wanted for a Thornhill bank robbery on Friday.At about 10:15 a.m., the man entered the TD Canada Trust branch on Yonge Street and passed a teller a note demanding cash. The teller complied and the man fled on foot, traveling northeast.The robber is a Caucasian man, 40 to 50 years old. Arsonist Caught

York Regional Police have arrested a Markham man in connection with a series of arsons dating back to April.
The most recent blaze was set in the early morning of Oct. 13, in the Lunau Lane and Lindemann Street area of Thornhill. The target was two bags full of leaves, which were found by police and firefighters on the road engulfed in flames.The blaze was linked to a dozen other fires between April 21 and 25 and May 5 to 12, all in Thornhill.A 36-year-old Markham man was arrested on Saturday and charged with 16 counts of arson.He was later released and is due back in court on Nov. 9.
