Jury Selection Begins For Alicia Ross Murder Trial

Jury selection will begin today in Newmarket, for the trial of a man accused of killing his next-door neighbour.
Daniel Sylvester of Markham is charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of 25-year-old Alicia Ross.
Her disappearance on Aug. 17, 2005, sparked one of the largest missing person searches in Ontario history with nearly 1,000 volunteers combing the area surrounding her home in Thornhill.
The exhaustive search turned up nothing.
Five weeks later, Sylvester surrendered to police on the advice of his lawyer.

Students Banned From Year-End Trip

At least five Grade 8 students from a Thornhill school have been banned from an end-of-the-year trip to Montreal, after disparaging remarks about teachers appeared on the Internet site, Facebook.com.
Last week, letters about the "misuse of the Internet" were sent to parents of about 20 students at Willowbrook Public School by principal Kelly Fassel.
Parents were asked to meet with Fassel about their children's conduct.
During the meetings, at least five of the students found out they were no longer welcome on next month's two-day trip to Montreal.
