Local Students to Receive A+ for Entrepreneurship

Markham, ON ~ The Ontario Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship and the Markham Small Business Enterprise Centre are giving high grades to local students who demonstrated a flair for entrepreneurship by successfully completing the Ontario Summer Company 2007 Program or winning the Secondary School Business Plan Competition.

Truck Tires Strike Vehicles On Hwy. 404

Two drivers escaped serious injury when a pair of truck tires flew off a gravel truck, striking a BMW and a tow truck in Aurora yesterday.According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the truck was travelling south on Hwy. 404 near Vandorf Road when the wheels flew off. One wheel slammed into the BMW’s left front corner and then hit the tow truck.Clean-up crews spent the afternoon searching for the wheels.

Hwy. 48 Reopens After Georgina Crash

All lanes near Hwy. 48 at Old Homestead Road in Georgina have been cleared after a tractor trailer went into the ditch, spilling some gravel.Georgina Fire Department reported to the scene first and blocked the highway after the crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m. The driver of the rig was not injured.

Man Inovled With Officer's Death Pleads Guilty

One of two men charged in the aftermath of York Regional Police Det.-Const. Robert Plunkett’s death has pleaded guilty to six theft and stolen property offences.Baseer Mohammed Yousafzai, 23, of Toronto pleaded guilty to one count of theft over $5,000, two counts of theft under $5,000, one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and two counts of breach of recognizance.Yousafzai was sentenced to eight months in jail. He has been in custody since his arrest on Aug. 2 and will serve another two months.When released, he will be on probation for two years.

Fatal Crash Closes Hwy. 9

One person is dead and several others injured following a crash on Hwy. 9 west of Newmarket this morning.
The five-vehicle crash occurred on the crest of a hill just west of Dufferin Street at about 9 a.m., Staff-Sgt. Chris Bullen said.
Police at the scene confirmed one person was killed instantly. Another was airlifted from the scene at and least three other people were taken to hospital by ambulance, two in critical condition.
Police are advising motorists to find an alternative route through the area as Hwy. 9 is expected to remain closed for up to eight hours.

Carjacking in Markham

York Regional Police are looking for five men after a 61-year-old woman was violently carjacked in Markham last weekend.At about 11:35 p.m. Saturday, the woman, who lives in the Brimley Road and Steeles Avenue area, was getting out of her Toyota Corolla when she was attacked by five men who grabbed her and threw her to the ground.

According to police, the men demanded her keys and then forced her back into the Corolla at gunpoint.

The men left the woman in her car in the Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue area and she called police.

Police are working with limited descriptions of the suspects.

T-Hill Bank Robbed

A man is wanted for a Thornhill bank robbery on Friday.At about 10:15 a.m., the man entered the TD Canada Trust branch on Yonge Street and passed a teller a note demanding cash. The teller complied and the man fled on foot, traveling northeast.The robber is a Caucasian man, 40 to 50 years old. Arsonist Caught

York Regional Police have arrested a Markham man in connection with a series of arsons dating back to April.
The most recent blaze was set in the early morning of Oct. 13, in the Lunau Lane and Lindemann Street area of Thornhill. The target was two bags full of leaves, which were found by police and firefighters on the road engulfed in flames.The blaze was linked to a dozen other fires between April 21 and 25 and May 5 to 12, all in Thornhill.A 36-year-old Markham man was arrested on Saturday and charged with 16 counts of arson.He was later released and is due back in court on Nov. 9.

Markham Libraries Hold Halloween Workshops

Markham library branches are offering ways to make Halloween memorable with a pair of workshops.The Angus Glen branch will hold a face painting workship where parents can watch as their children have their faces painted by a professional. The instructor will demonstrate tips and techniques for creating spectacular designs that will dazzle family and friends Halloween night.The workshop takes place on Oct. 27 from 2 to 3 p.m. Cost is $10 per child and is open to all ages.The library is at 3990 Major Mackenzie Dr., east of Warden Avenue.Children can also learn how to create Halloween crafts in a workshop at the Milliken Mills branch on Oct. 27 from 1 to 2 p.m. The workshop costs $15, includes all materials, and is open to children between the ages of seven to 12.The Milliken branch is at 7600 Kennedy Rd., Unit 1, just south of 14th Avenue. YRP Release Sketch Of Sex Assault Suspect

York Regional Police need your help finding the man responsible for a sex assault in south Markham on Tuesday.

A 43-year-old woman was walking to work on Kennedy Road south of Denison Streetat about 7:15 a.m. when a man grabbed her from behind, pulled her into a grassy plot of land, threw her to the ground and touched her inappropriately.

The woman was able to fend the man off and he fled south on Kennedy where she approached a passerby who called police.

She was not physically injured in the attack.The suspect is a Caucasian male, 30 to 40 years old, five-feet,eight-inches tall with a medium build and shoulder-length dark hair.

At the time, he was wearing a black sweatshirt, possibly with a hood.

Press Release - Town Of Markham Council Approves Hiring Auditor General

October 17, 2007... At Last week's Council meeting, Town of Markham Councillors approved the hiring of an Auditor General for an intial two-year full time contact. The Auditor General will be responsible for assisting Council in holding itself and its administrators accountable for the quality of stewardship over public funds and for achievement of value for money in municipal operators. The Auditor General will report to Council on a quarterly basis.

"This is an important position that will help us ensure that the Town's operations are being managed as effectibely as possible. While I believe Town of Markham staff are among the very best in Canada, I also believe an independent perspective can help us identify ways in which we can do an even better job for Town residents," said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "This new position is really all about ensuring added value for taxpayers dollars.

The Auditor General postion, added to Ontario's Municipal Act in 2006, has broad powers. For example:

- the municipality, its local boards and municipally-controlled corporations shall provide the Auditor General any information he or she believes is necessary to perform his or her duties.

-the Auditor General is entitled to free access to anything necessary to perform his or her duties.

- the Auditor General may examine any person on oath on any matter pertinent to an audit examination.

Markham will be among the first Ontario municipalities to hier an Auditor General. An Interview Committee comprised of Mayor Frank Scarpitti; Chair of the Finance Committe Councillor Joe Virgillo; and chair of the Budget Sub-Committee Councillor Dan Horchik has been established to select the Town of Markham Auditor General.

Markham, ON ~ Markham officially launched its participation in the Respect in Sport (RiS) program, today, October 16. Actors Filming in Markham

Film stars Jude Law and Forest Whitaker are at the Angus Glen Golf Club this week filming a movie called Repossession Mambo. Filming began Monday morning and continues until Thursday.Part of the film is being shot in a house on Harper Hill Road . Scenes will also be shot from the third hole of Augus' south golf course.

Third Body Found In Burned Out Van

York Regional Police say a third body has been discovered in a burned out van found in King Township.According to Investigators, the discovery was made following an examination by an expert forensic anthropologist.Police have said DNA or dental records will be required to identify a woman and a girl found burned to death inside the van.The bodies were discovered after a man showed up at a home late Sunday night and screamed through the intercom for someone to call 911.Police say they are still unable to question the 46-year-old man, who suffered serious burns and is under sedation in hospital.

YRP Search For Sexual Assault Suspect

York Regional Police are seaching in south Markham for a man wanted in connection with a possible sexual assault. The Town of Markham will announce today its participation with an online program called Respect In Sport.This program will teach coaches and parents how to prevent abuse, neglect, haraassment and bullying in sport, and to address the legal and ethical responsbilities associated with these issues.Markham is the first community in Canada to launch this program.

Two Bodies Found In Burned Van In King Township

Two bodies have been discovered in a burned out van in King Township.
York Regional Police found the van just before midnight, near Seventh Concession and Sixteenth Sideroad.
A third person was found alive near the van and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The license plate on the van has been traced to a home in east-end Toronto.
Toronto Police and YRP are both investigating.

Veteran Firefighter Dies Of Job-related Illness

A veteran Markham firefighter with strong roots in the community has died from an job-related illness.
Capt. Paul Donahoe, 51, a resident of Stouffville, died Tuesday evening from Non-Hodgkinʼs Lymphoma, according to a statement from Markham Fireʼs union.
Capt. Donahoe was known for his community involvement and served as the president of the Markham Fair last year.He is survived by his wife, Luanne, and son, Joshua.The funeral will be held at The Bridge Church, 5440 16th Ave., Markham Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Man Charged For Luring Children

Toronto Police have charged a Markham man in connection with an Internet luring probe.Between February and October, the man had sexually explicit conversations with an undercover officer posing as a 13-year-old girl.Suraj Khera, 29, of Markham is charged with two counts of luring a child under 14 years of age, invitation to sexual touching, exposure to a person under 14 years of age and possession of marijuana.

Markham Store Robbed

Three men are wanted for robbing a Markham convenience store on Wednesday. At about 10:15 p.m., three men entered the Daisy Mart on Kennedy Road. One of them struck the clerk with a baseball bat while the others gathered cash and cigarettes before the trio fled, possibly in a dark green van with stripes along the side.The clerk was taken to hospital, treated and released.
