Unionville Hosts Simcoe Day Festival

On holiday Monday, Main Street Unionville's shops and restaurants will be open all day long for the Simcoe Day Festival. Live music will be playing along the street throughout the day and double-decker bus rides wail be offered.

A reminder, The Markham Civic Centre, with the exception of the volunteer kiosk, will be closed on Monday for Simcoe Day.

Man Charged With Officer's Death

A 19-year-old has been charged with manslaughter after a veteran York Regional police officer was dragged by a car and killed in Unionville, yesterday morning.
According to Police Chief Armand La Barge, Const. Robert Plunkett, a 43-year-old father of three, approached the driver of a stolen Honda on a quiet residential street when the car suddenly reversed.
Plunkett, pinned between the car's open door and a tree, could not get away and was dragged onto a nearby lawn, where he was left with serious injuries.
Plunkett died in hospital soon after the incident, which occurred shortly before 6 a.m.
Nadeem Jiwah, 19, has been charged with manslaughter, but police say more charges are pending.
A second man, 23-year-old Baseer Yousafzai, has been charged with theft and breach of bail.

Sports Report

The Argonauts suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Montreal Alouettes 29-27.
Montreal RB Ben Cahoon filled in for kicker Damon Duvall, who was ejected from the game in the 4th quarter, and kicked a 22-yard winning field goal in overtime to give the Als the victory.
Toronto also lost quarterback Damon Allen, who left the game with a tendon injury.
Allen's status is unknown.

The Blue Jays begin a three-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers tonight.
Roy Halladay (11-5) will be on the mound, while Texas counters with Kevin Milwood (7-9).
First pitch - 7:05pm at the Rogers Centre.
Meanwhile, shortstop Royce Clayton has been designated for assignment.
The Jays will have ten days to decide if they should release Clayton, or send him to Syracuse

Toronto FC will host David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy this Sunday.
Beckham will on be on the pitch but an ankle injury might prevent him from playing.
Kickoff - 7:30pm at BMO Field.
