Press Release: Markham Embraces Ontario's New GTA Transit Initiatives

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti enthusiastically welcomed Friday's Ontario government announcement of their 17.5 billion investment in a rapid transit action plan for the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.
Markham, with a population of about 270,000 is one of Canada's fastest growing, most diverse communities and is home to many of the country's leading technology businesses.

Press Release: Markham Pilots Outreach To Potential Volunteers

The Town of Markham has partnered with the Maytree Foundation and the Region of York's Inclusivity Action Planning group to pilot a community outreach program to encourage increased diversity in Markham's volunteer sector.
Volunteer information sessions will be held at the Markham Civic Centre on June 18 and July 4, from 2-6pm.
During these sessions, community members will learn about the benefits of volunteering.
Those interested in volunteering will be able to observe various committees and board in action, and receive training on governance issues such as the roles and responsibilities of board members.

Man Kidnapped From Markham Home

Two men and one youth have been charged with the kidnapping of a Markham man.
The 20-year-old victim was abducted from his home on Saturday and forced into a car, where he was assaulted.
York Regional Police were able to track down the assailants in Whitchurch-Stouffville, after the victim called 911 from his cell phone.
Nathainel Schifitto, 22, and Daniel Kelly, 19, have been charged with kidnapping, breaking and entering, and assault.
The 15-year-old youth has also been charged with kidnapping.

The Washington Nationals ended the Blue Jays winning streak yesterday afternoon with a 4-2 victory.
Frank Thomas hit his 496th career homerun in a losing cause.
The Jays are off today and will begin a three game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, pitcher AJ Burnett is likely heading to the DL after experiencing some stiffness in his shoulder, during a throwing session.

Toronto FC shutout FC Dallas yesterday 4-0.
Toronto's goals were scored by Maurice Edu, Danny Dichio, Carl Robinson and Jeff Cunningham.
TFC will now head out on a six game roadtrip, beginning in New England on June 23.
