Man Charged With YRP Officer's Death Makes Court Appearance

A man charged with the murder of York Regional Police Officer Robert Plunkett made a brief court appearance yesterday.
Nadeem Jiwa, 19, of Toronto was told his next appearance in a Newmarket courtroom will take place on Sept. 7, according to Crown attorney Peter Westgate.
Jiwa is charged with first-degree murder after an original charge of manslaughter was upgraded.
Plunkett, 43, died on Aug. 2 in Markham while investigating the theft of airbags from cars.

8-Year-Old Gives Statement At Sentencing Hearing

Eight-year-old Katie Manchester walked to the front of a Newmarket courtroom Wednesday and told a sentencing hearing she was "mad" at two street racers who killed her parents in May 2006.
Rob and Lisa Manchester died instantly when their car was hit by one of two vehicles that witnesses say were racing up Yonge Street near Stouffville road, at speeds close to 140 kilometres per hour.
Dressed in pink and carrying a stuffed animal, the second grade student spoke about the loss of her parents.
Since the accident, she has lived with relatives in Aurora.Rubin Rodrigues, 22, plead guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death, while Marco Gasparro, 19, plead guilty to dangerous driving

The Oakland Athletics defeated the Blue Jays yesterday 4-1, sweeping the three-game series.

AJ Burnett was solid for the first six innings, but then gave up four runs in the seventh.

Three of the four runs were unearned as Toronto's infield committed two errors during the inning.

The Jays are in California to begin a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Jessie Litsch (4-6) will face LA's Ervin Santana (5-11).

First Pitch - 10:05pm.

The Maple Leafs beat the Brantford Red Sox last night 13-8, in game five of the Intercounty Baseball League final.

Toronto leads the best-of-seven series 3-2.

Game six is set for Friday in Brantford.

Toronto FC have announced that Jeff Cunningham and Ronnie O'Brien will miss the rest of the season due to injury.

Cunningham is suffering from a sports hernia while O'Brien has a torn meniscus in his right knee.

At the FIBA Americas Olympic qualifying tournament, team Canada fell to Brazil 75-67.
