Bomb Scare In Richmond Hill

A Richmond Hill plaza was evacuated yesterday after a passerby spotted a box containing a grenade, in the parking lot behind the strip mall.
York Regional police later determined the device was not in danger of exploding, even though it may have contained some of its original explosive material, because it no longer had a detonating device.
It was later discovered that the grenade had been turned into a cigarette lighter.
Part of Elgin Mills Road was closed while bomb experts worked to dismantle the grenade.
