Markham Council Meeting Highlights (Sept. 11)

Congratulations

Council formally acknowledged the tremendous
work of the committees, community volunteers
and Town staff who delivered a number of very
successful community events throughout the
summer. Special mention was made of
Councillor Carolina Moretti and the Canada Day
Committee, Regional Councillor Jack Heath and
the Markham Jazz Festival Committee and
Councillor Logan Kanapathi, staff member Jason
Tsien and the Milliken Children’s Festival
Committee.

A Markham street to be named in honour
of Terry Fox

Council unanimously voted to name a street
within the Town of Markham after Canadian
hero Terry Fox. 2007 marks the 27th
anniversary of the Terry Fox Run—a nowinternational
event that raises millions of dollars
for Cancer research. This year the run is being
held on Sunday, September 16. The
Markham/Unionville run begins at the Unionville
Library at 9 a.m.; the Thornhill run begins at
Thornlea Secondary School at 9 a.m..

Thornhill Secondary Plan for Thornhill
Planning District

Council approved the amendment the Official
Plan (Revised 1987), as amended, to
incorporate an amendment to the Thornhill
Secondary Plan for the Thornhill Planning
District (Planning District #3). The amendment
restricts the height of buildings in the Heritage
District along Yonge Street to three storeys.
